|
Raloxifene (ral ox' i feen) is used to help reduce calcium loss from bones. Raloxifene is used to prevent and treat osteoporosis, a disease common in women past menopause, which results in bones that break easily. This medication reduces both the risk of spinal fractures due to osteoporosis and the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

How To Take
|
|
Raloxifene comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day at any time, with or without food. To help you remember to take Raloxifene, take it around the same time every day. Take Raloxifene exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Continue to take Raloxifene even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Raloxifene without talking to your doctor.

Side Effects
|
|
Raloxifene is not for use in premenopausal women (women who have not passed menopause). Raloxifene may not be right for you. Before taking Raloxifene, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you: have had blood clots in your legs, lungs, or eyes, a stroke, mini-stroke (TIA/transient ischemic attack), or a type of irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation); have had breast cancer. Raloxifene has not been fully studied in women who have a history of breast cancer; have liver or kidney problems; have taken estrogen in the past and had a high increase of triglycerides (a kind of fat in the blood); are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast-feeding; are allergic to Raloxifene or any other drugs; have cancer and if you have or have ever had breast lumps or cancer, high blood cholesterol or triglycerides, phlebitis in the leg, heart failure, or liver disease; are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Raloxifene. Do not take Raloxifene if you: have or have had blood clots in your legs, lungs, or eyes. Taking Raloxifene may increase the risk of getting blood clots. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant or are nursing a baby. It is not known if Raloxifene passes into breast milk or what effect it might have on the baby. If you become pregnant while taking Raloxifene, call your doctor immediately. Raloxifene may harm the fetus. Raloxifene has not been found to cause spotting or menstrual-like bleeding nor to increase the risk of cancer of the uterine lining. However, tell your doctor if you develop unexplained vaginal bleeding or spotting. Raloxifene has not been found to cause breast tenderness or swelling nor to increase the risk of breast cancer. However, tell your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts. Before you have any laboratory tests, tell the person doing the test that you take Raloxifene, as this medication may interfere with some lab tests.

Missed Dose
|
|
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Drug Interactions
|
|
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) If you are taking warfarin or other coumarin blood thinners; cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid); diazepam (Valium, Valrelease, Zetran); diazoxide (Proglycem), and estrogen or hormone replacement therapy (ERT or HRT). Raloxifene should not be taken with cholestyramine or estrogens. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
